Toyota to Announce Action Soon for Prius Hybrids

By KELLY OLSEN AP Business Writer

Toyota said Sunday that it will soon announce plans to deal with braking problems in its prized Prius hybrid amid reports it has decided to issue a recall for the vehicle in Japan, a possible new embarrassment for the world’s biggest automaker.

Toyota Motor Corp. has already had to recall more than 7 million other cars in the U.S., Europe and China over a sticky accelerator and floor mats that can get caught in the gas pedal. Those problems and criticism of Toyota’s response to them have sullied the stellar reputation for quality long enjoyed by one of Japan’s corporate icons.

Separately, the company has told dealers in the United States it is preparing to repair the brakes on thousands of Prius vehicles there, according to an e-mail sent by a company executive. It was unclear whether Toyota planned a formal U.S. recall.

Toyota will sell a new Prius station wagon or SUV in Japan by the end of 2010, according to the Japanese national newspaper Yomiuri on November 13.

The new Prius will retail for only around 2 million yen (€15,000), according to the newspaper.

The car will be propelled by a new kind of lithium ion battery, similar to the type commonly employed in the latest electric vehicles. Most hybrid batteries are currently made of nickel-metal hydride, which are less powerful.

At the 2007 Geneva Motor Show Toyota unveiled a Hybrid X concept, which shows the automaker has been tinkering with the idea of putting together large vehicles and hybrids for some time.

The combination of a hybrid engine, beloved by environmentalists, and the oft-demonized SUV, is likely to spark comment.

Regardless, with its Prius mid-size sedan the best-selling green car by leaps and bounds, the hybrid king is clearly not finished adding to its lineup.

Toyota Sai

New Toyota Sai

Toyota Motor Corporation has unveiled a more expensive and bigger hybrid-only model than its hit Prius, underlining the Japanese automaker’s ambitions to make green technology more widespread.

The “Sai” sedan is Toyota’s second hybrid-only model after the Prius. Toyota offers hybrid versions of other car models.

Sai, which means “talent” and “color,” will be sold only in Japan, starting Dec.7, targeting monthly sales of 3,000 vehicles. No global sales plans have been decided.

Hybrids get better mileage than regular gasoline engine cars by switching between an electric motor and a gas engine. Other automakers are also beefing up their hybrid lineups, including hybrid-only models.

Government incentives, including cash-for-clunkers programs, and tax breaks are sending Prius orders soaring in Japan, with the waiting list for the car growing to several months.

Hybrid sales in Japan have been the one bright spot for Toyota, which has been losing money, battered by the global economic slump.

The Sai gets 23 kilometers per liter, or about 54 miles per gallon, double the mileage of a comparable regular gas-engine model, according to Toyota.

The Prius gets 38 kilometers per liter, which converts to about 90 miles per gallon under Japanese mileage-test conditions. It is promising 51 mpg in the city and 48 mpg on the highway in the U.S.

The Sai comes with a bigger 2.4 liter engine compared to the 1.8-liter Prius, is roomier and has fancier features such as an interior made from plastic that uses plant-derived materials.

It is also more expensive, starting at 3.38 million yen ($37,500). The third-generation Prius, which went on sale earlier this year, starts at just over 2 million yen ($22,000) in Japan and about $22,000 in the U.S.

The Sai looks rather sedate compared to the Prius with its more circular styling.

This model shows our hopes to make hybrids more widespread,” Toyota official Takuji Nakamoto told reporters.

The Sai will be sold at all dealer outlets in Japan, totaling some 4,000 nationwide, like the Prius. Some Toyota models are sold at just some of the showrooms because they are designed to appeal to certain kinds of consumers.

The Sai will be assembled at a Toyota Motor Kyushu plant in southwestern Japan, Toyota said.

The Prius is the world leader in gas-electric hybrid sales, selling more than 1.4 million vehicles since its debut a decade ago.

New Toyota Celica!

New Toyota Celica

New Toyota Celica

The Toyota Celica is back! This is the latest old school model to be redesigned for modern times along the theme of the Mini, the Scirocco and others set for release including the Capri and the Calibra. Manufacturers seem intent on looking back to previous models when it comes to latest release but with the shots of this latest Celica then who are we to argue. Codenamed the FT-86 this rear wheeled drive car is being called a concept but is likely to be available from UK dealerships next year. Named after the Corolla AE-86 which is a Japanese based rear drive coupe with cult status for its drifting abilities is what happens when Toyota and Subaru get together. At the front it has a superb air intake and the now standard item on all new cars – the LED headlights and on the inside touches inspired possibly by Audi are the flat bottom steering wheel. Set to cost around £22k when released the ‘Celica’ shares its chassis with the Subaru Legacy.

Toyota to Release Medium Sized Hybrid Sedan

Toyota SAI Hybrid

Toyota SAI Hybrid

Sources close to the matter stated that Toyota plans to release an all new medium sized hybrid sedan in July of 2010.

The source states that this vehicle will be both bigger and more luxurious than the current Prius.  Tentatively called the SAI, it will be marketed as Toyota’s version of the Lexus HS250h.  The vehicle will use the same basic structure, but have a different exterior and interior design.

An unnamed source familiar with the development said, “The drive will feel lighter.”

The SAI should have a starting price between the HS250h and the new Prius.

The addition of another hybrid model fits in with the recent announcement by Toyota President Akio Toyoda stating that the company plans to diversify its hybrid products in response to increased hybrid caused by large government subsidies.

In addition to the midsize hybrid sedan, Toyota plans to introduce a cheaper and smaller hybrid based on the Vitz model and a minivan based hybrid sometime in 2011.

In order to boost hybrid production, Toyota will need to increase its battery production capacity or secure additional sources for batteries as recent news states that their main supplier, Panasonic, is having difficulty meeting the battery demand of the current Toyota hybrid models.
